KGS Post-Mortem: martinled[16k] vs. Phoon[19k?]

Game in SGF

Automatch paired me with martinled, a 16th kyu player. The game started well; I was playing quickly and he was responding adeptly. However, he slowly outmatched me, and I semi-resigned at move 158.

One move turned it from a close match to a blowout, and that was move 169. I had written the A11 dango off as dead, so I tried to protect two other stones by playing at A7. If I had played at A8 or A9, the lump would have lived. That was approximately a 25-point error.

On the bright side, I now have a solid rank: 20k.

Your first four moves all reinforced the stone your opponent approached, while also doing something else. This is a good approach – certainly one I would find difficult to counter.

Move 9 is the first slack move. It leaves you with a lot of stones in a low position on the bottom side, already reduced by the white stone at P5.

The stone at D4 is already supported by the stone at K3, so white does not have good continuations. If white invades at C3, you can block at D3 and build a wall that will threaten the two white stones on the right; if white plays a double approach, you can press at D6 with similar results.

This means you can play more positively.

The strongest move is probably the pincer at D9. This is a little deep in white’s position, but in the top left, white has extended into the centre at the cost of leaving weaknesses in the corner. The continuation will be complicated, which will favour the stronger player.

If you want a simpler approach, you could cap at E6 (also aiming at the white stones on the right), or take the initiative yourself at Q10.

(a yahoomess on the endless thread)

White 15 is suicidal – there is no room for this stone to live.

Your immediate reaction should be to attach at R15, followed by W-Q14, B-O16, then when white runs out you connect R12 to K10.

Commented on the wrong post. This was the game against Martinled from the next (previous) post.

Not a problem. Moved the comments to where they belong. –BG
